Tommy had finished his five-mile run and dripping sweat from his long blond hair, he was cooling down poolside with a glass of orange juice while Neil did his morning laps.

His cell rang on the patio table, and he glanced at the screen and didn’t recognize the number. Figuring it might be work-related, he answered. “Ranger Donovan.”

“Hey, Tommy, it’s me, Lukas.”

For a second, Tommy lost his breath and couldn’t speak. Anger hit him next and he did his best not to yell at his older brother. “I’m glad you called. I’ve been so fuckin worried about you.”

“I’m okay. Doing better now. I needed time to sort things out. A lot of shit came down on me in Austin and then the plane crash. I had trouble handling it.”

“Long as you ain’t fuckin dead,” said Tommy. “Want to tell me where you are?”

“Here and there. I went to Mexico for a while and now I’m in California.”

“Coming back to Texas?”

“Don’t know yet. I’m working here part-time and I’ve got myself a place to stay. Not sure what my plans are.”

“Will you keep in touch? I am your brother and I worry about you—like every fuckin day.”

“Yeah, I’ll call you, Tommy. Don’t worry about me, okay? I’m good on my own, and I’m doing better every day… looking after myself.”

“Sure. I won’t worry.” Tommy ended the call and his hands were shaking.

Neil was out of the pool and drying off. “Who was that? You’re all fuckin pale. Was it Mom?”

“No, but I’m thinking I should call her,” said Tommy.

“Why?”

“That was Lukas.”

“No shit? He finally called you?”

“Yep. Says he’s in Cali.”

“Huh. Up to you if you tell Mom or not, but I think she’d be relieved just to know he called you and he’s okay.”

“Yeah, I’m gonna tell her.”

“He coming home soon?”

“Doesn’t know. He’s trying to figure shit out.”

“Tell Mom. She’ll be relieved to know he ain’t dead.”

“Yeah, so am I.”
